My art moving web 2.0 Style

design_keyboard20080226.jpgSo a couple of days ago I posted many questions on twitter referring to my goals and what I am looking to do as I move forward in the web 2.0 space. One of the questions was in reference to producing a podcast. I thought I would need a new computer, a wireless router and a plan! Currently I have high speed Verizon DSL installed in my house, but my ten year old dell has a small processor, and very little room to grow.

Folks said that a Macbook or MacBook pro would be the best bet for someone who pretty much wants a system that is designed for artists, video production, and audio production. My beautiful fiance Michelle helped on that front and ordered me a MacBook Pro. I have also learned that my good friend Zen_Jewitch on twitter has graciously offered me a wireless router that he had, and is currently not using. (Thank you Zen)
Wow, what a week man. And on top of all that sales of my lathe turned wine bottle stoppers have been great, and I am talking to a few other wineries at the moment about having them carry the stoppers as well. If you know anyone with a winery or a wine shop that would be interested I would love the referral.

So, looks like it is moving forward and I have one last question for my community. I am going to be doing a video podcast of my Woodturning, as well as doing an audio interview series with creative type people in many fields. I will discuss not only woodturning, but marketing for artists, web 2.0, social networking, trade shows, and any other subjects of interest to those in the creative field.

The name for the Podcast is what I am questioning. I have an idea, and I’d love to run it past you.

“The Woodturning & Creative Arts” Podcast - Is this name too long? Should that be my subtitle or tag line? What do you think? Production of the show should start in approximatly one month. If you subscribe to my blog, I will have an announcement here. I will also be streaming live on Ustream TV to sort of get the hand of wood turning in front of a camera. I will also answer questions there as well as hopefully get some feedback and some episode ideas for the podcast.

So what do you think of the name? Too Long? Too short?? Let me know what you think. If you weigh in on the name…I just might send you something. Just leave me a comment and I will email you with information! Thanks for your ideas!

My first reaction is to eliminate *The* from the beginning. Just go with Woodturning & Creative Arts.

I agree with AnnOhio. I would take out ‘The.’

I think the name gives a clear discription of what you are doing. I like clear discriptions. Woodturning & Creative Arts.

I am excited for live stream, I think it would be neat to watch!

Looking over the list of podcasts I subscribe to, most of them have fairly short titles. These are also the podcasts that I remember most. Have you thought about using Magic Woodworks as the name? Then as you say, you could use “Woodturning & Creative Arts” as your tagline.

An added benefit to this approach is that it reinforces name recognition. Be Magic Woodworks in all online aspects.

I agree with dropping the “The” in “Woodturning & Creative Arts.”

But what about “Turning Wood : a podcast about woodturning and other creative arts.”

I like Mary’s idea, “Magic Woodworks”. You want the title short and easy to remember and you get the name recognition. Woodturning & Creative Arts is too generic.

    Cheers!

I agree with the other posts. Drop the “The”, maybe go with Magic Woodworks, or Turning Wood.

What about “iLathe”? Just thought it had a ring to it.

All of the suggestions are great!

I have to agree with AnnOhio and others. Take out the “THE”. Though Ozzy’s iLathe is pretty funny. Cheers!

Turning Wood is very nice– what about the Wood Artist?

This is tricky, the name needs to clearly state what the idea of the podcast is, but it can’t be too long.

Yeah, drop “the” at the very least.

I’ll vote for “Magic Woodworks”, with the subtittle of Woodturning and creative arts. Probably that is best, it does market you and your business but adds some of the other dimensions you want to get at in your ‘cast.

    But I’m no expert!!

By the way, those wine stoppers are beautiful!

(continued from my previous entry above) how about:

    Turning Wood (previous stated)
    Morning Wood (yes, naughty)
    Woodcast (if it’s not taken)
    LatheCast
    Good Wood
    SpinCast
    Wood Arts
    SpindleCast

    That’s all I’ve got atm.

    Here’s my stream of consciousness:

    Going with the Grain
    A Tree in the Forest
    Turn-craft
    Roundabout the Wood
    Turning Today
    Turn Talk

Ann - I love the comment, I think that may be the way I go.

Monrae - You’ll have a front row seat anytime!

Mary - the only reason I thought of not going with “Magic Woodworks” was because I want the title to be easy to find in search, and also an easy description of what the podcast will be. Thank you for the thoughts!

Kristina - you have sparked some “Creative Juices” on that one.

Amy - Hmmmm, I’ll have to think about that. I agree with brand building 100% My concern is when I tell people my company name, they say things like “Whats so magic about it?” They say things like what do you do? and also I want to convey that I am not specific only to wood. Thank you for the brain teaser.

Ozzy - Thank you for more brain teasers…I am getting dizzy now…lol. Thank you.

Michelle - Thats not a suggestion, something tells me your looking for free schwag!! or dinner!!

Rabitroodle - Thank you for your suggestion, I think that may be the route.

-Suzy, I’m trying to open it up to creative arts as well. Not trying to box myself in.

-Vidsaw, thank you. I think the beginning of my podcast will open this way.

“My name is Keith Burtis from Magic Woodworks, welcome to woodturning and creative arts podcast!”

Thanks everyone for the comments so far, and you’ll all be getting something soon!!

Kristina & John, thanks again for the entries, and I love most of them. My only concvern is that it is all “Wood” I know I am about wood, but I want to reach a little more broad of an audience. Would a painter watch the wood cast? I dont know, so , my dilemma is wanting to attract the creative professional as well as the woodturning artist. I have many thoughts on marketing, creative process, woodturning, and arts and technology. I would like to grab those viewers as well. Now, I may do a woodturning only Podcast, give folks to reach that feed separate of the other musings, who knows…I am still brainstorming. Thanks again.

Sounds to me like you really like “Woodturning and creative arts podcast” as the name. Well, then just refer to it as the WCA Cast.
“Hey, this is Keith, and welcome to the WCA, the woodturning and creative arts podcast….”
    Just putting it out there….

Short is almost always better. You also have a lot invested in the brand Magic Woodworks, and that doesn’t keep you from writing on your blog about other creative endeavors. You can take care of that on both blog and podcast with a tagline: Keith Burtis on Woodturning and Creative Arts.

I suggest you rework your blog banner art to incorporate the tagline, and marry your blog and your podcast on the same platform, right here. Whether it’s text, audio or video, it’s part and parcel of the same creative outlet — you and your art.

Whatever you decide about the name, I’d keep them all the same — i.e. not have a podcast that is named differently than your blog.

Looking forward to seeing you at work on the podcast.

Given that “Magic Woodworks” is established, would “Woodworking Magic” be a suitable title for a cast? It can be found alphabetically and logically, and it’s closely compatible with the blog. Indeed, they can be seen as counterparts, not just in counterpoint. Blog–I show you magic woodworks; cast–here’s how we work the magic.

Oops. I missed your comment above, about wanting to diversify among the creative arts. What about dropping the “wood” and calling it “Working Magic”? Or does that get too far away from what you want to present?

Hey Keith… I’m with Connie on this one - personally I would extend the wonderful brand you’ve built up around your blog and use the same name on your podcast. You can broaden the subject in your tagline.

    My two cents!

Hey keith, I think the title you came up with is a bit lacking. Here are a few ideas from the top of my head:

    As the Wood Turns
    As The Lathe Turns
Magic Woodworks (I like that. why not use it?)
    Creative Turns
    Creative(s) Confidential
    Growth Rings
    Bench Dogs
    Branding Iron
    A Dovetail Joint
    Burl & Block

Or you can do like I did for my old podcast on filmmaking, and take a unique woodworking term and make it your title, maybe changing it just a bit.

    Good luck!
