Art Starts Ugly!

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Glue Ups1.JPG

My art starts ugly! I have to cut boards making lots of sawdust, then glue the boards together for the effects I am looking for in my piece. Sometimes I cut again, and reglue for different patterns….it’s a darn mess!

Is this just a metaphor for life? Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to take a step forward? Sometimes it gets ugly before it can get pretty? There are lessons that need to be learned before you can progress?

Tell me do the roses get seeded in the dirt before becoming beautiful plants? I wonder, if all beauty in life comes from perceived “dirt”

What do you think?

After all no one likes when it rains on their picnic, but they love having the green grass to lay on,the beautiful landscapes it brings, and the water to drink.

From Adversity comes greatness but only if you perceive the adversity to be opportunity.

Just a short rant - What are your thoughts?

Being Aware

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Few things on the net these days in my mind are really worth a meme or going viral. Its the (pardon me) stupid videos on YouTube that get all the hits, and the crazy rumor spreaders that seem to make the top page of Digg. So here I am on my couch just outside of Buffalo New York telling you that I have a meme worth spreading, a virus that should surely effect us all!

Being Aware!

My new friend from Twitter @Sorenj, has created many blog posts that are amazing in quality, but I would suspect not the viral million hit YouTube video of the guy punching out his brother. Whats the problem folks? Not enough action or drama in the video of a person helping the old lady across the street? I bet it would be more fun if her dress fell down…now thats something worth watching , huh.

I may sound preachy, and I may sound like I’m rambling, so I will get to the point.
Become aware! Become aware of the people around you, your present space, and the energy that envelops you all the time. Be aware of someone who needs help and be aware of those in need.

In geek speak - Someone asked me the other day. “How come you link out to other talented artists from your blog?” aren’t they competition, haven’t you spent a lot of time and work on your site?” Folks, I am not going to field that question except for to say that spreading love and planting seeds always bears fruit.

So, here is my call out to you, my friends and anyone who comes across this blog post from now until the end of time.

1. Read @Sorenj’s Blog Post called How I can Make the World a Better Place

2. Please leave him a comment. Show him, show the world that we are not all walking around with blinders on our eyes like racehorses all racing to a finish line that doesn’t exist!

3. Tell three other people about the post! Or trackback to his post in an effort to create a social shift. (If you are thinking that your one post read by 5 people doesn’t make a difference, think again!)

People, the world is changing rapidly, the climate, the economy, the social nets, and the way that we interact with the outside world. Take a day and go fishing with your kids! Spend time smelling the roses. be interactive with the world and the people in it! You don’t have to be a preacher, just doing a good deed, and being aware of others is all it will take.

The kind actions of one erase the thoughtless actions of many!

I am going to call out on a few friends that I know understand the meaning of Awareness and Giving as well as share a shortish video by Daniel Goldman at the TED Conference.

Marina Martin - Social Media Entrepreneur and Efficiency Specialist.

Kevin Lim - Educator and Social Media Guru

Gloria Bell - Breast Cancer Termination Warrior! , Social media Friend.
Gloria has already added a post, so please look at her blog as well :)

Favorite Keynote or Speech?

Monday, May 19th, 2008

This coming July, at Podcamp Boston 3
, I will be giving a session on the utilization of multi media in a web 2.0 environment for the arts and artists. In my preparation for this session I have been doing a bit of research on good, great, and outstanding keynotes and speeches. Today on Twitter I asked ‘What was your favorite Keynote or speech?” So, I thought I would extend this to my blog and ask you all the same question.

Whats your favorite keynote or speech from the past? Link me up!!!
Thanks

Wicked Wine Bottle Stoppers & Drunk on Links!

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Stoppers.jpg

This was a long week of wood turning projects in my shop. I have been spending a lot of time knocking out my Exotic wood wine bottle stoppers as well as producing live webcast shows of my art. I have been enjoying the live webcasting and have found that Blog TV seems to work best for me. However, it would be great if the quality was a bit better so that the viewers could see better the detail of the work. I will be experimenting with this as time goes on. The Woodturning and creative Arts show airs every Monday Evening at 7:00 PM EST. I have a few shows recorded and available for viewing here.

This Weeks most Noteable:

Gary Vaynerchuck, of Wine Library TV, The Thunder Show, and the blog that sports his name was on “The Big Idea with Donny Deutch” this week. Gary is a social media maven whom I have drawn quite a bit of inspiration from as well as amazing bits of knowledge. If you have been living under a social media rock these past few months check Gary out. Subscribe to everything he puts out and I swear you wont regret it!

This weeks landmark:

I have Opened an Etsy storefront. I have a few items in there currently and will be filling it as the coming week unfolds. It is “wine season” here in the Buffalo area a a lot of our local wineries have been gearing up for the spring and summer rush. In the sprit I have listed some beautiful wine stopper sets in my Etsy store.

This weeks Update:

I will be showing my art this year at the Letchworth Art Festival in Wyoming County NY.
I will also be speaking at Podcamp Boston 3 about New Multi Media Tools for artists using Web 2.0.

Check out the links, Check Out Gary! And if you have any new hot multi media applications for artists…let me know! I’d love ti hear from you. have an amazing week!
