Like you, I feel I have gained a lot through connecting with people online. Just a few:

- let me actively participate in and initiate discussions when I was very shy
- gradually helped me push past my shyness
- my blog (which I have been writing for 4 1/2 years) easily advanced my career by about 5-10 years in the first year. I was seen to have expertise and asked to write and speak
- speaking led to teaching
- teaching and my other participation online led to work which allowed me to quit my day job and pursue a new career in consulting
- I have made many friends world wide. My social life has never been better.

If you look at it as a whole, the online world helped me find people with similar interests, and has allowed me to meet many of those people in person.

Cheers,
Conine
